Who's going to Virginia Trail Running Festival?

Free. You can start with nothing.

Free, and always will be. NavRun makes money from race-day planning for runners who want it, never from this. Ultras change constantly, sometimes the morning of. Always confirm with the race director and the official website before you rely on anything here.

No official GPX on file yet. These are the aid station coordinates, not the trail. Have the GPX? Send us the link.

The 100 mile starts at 6:00 AM from the Mark E Hufeisen Horse Center and is run on the New River Trail. Finishers get a buckle. Aid stations come pretty much every 5 to 8 miles, with lots of crew access.

The surface is crushed gravel and the grade is almost flat. The only major hill is on the 100 mile, on the way from the river up to Draper. Cell service along the river is extremely limited, and nights can be very cold.

The race

What this one is

A weekend of trail running on the New River Trail in New River Trail State Park, Virginia, held at peak fall colors. Choose the 100 mile, 50 mile, 50k or 25k. The trail is a rails-to-trails path of crushed gravel along the New River, with trestles, rapids and Foster Falls, and very little elevation change. Everything starts and finishes at the Mark E Hufeisen Horse Center.

Crew rules
One crew vehicle per runner at a time, and only at the crew-access aid stations. Crew may not have fires, alcohol or dogs. A runner may not be aided more than 100 feet from any aid station. Crew may not ride bikes or run along the course during the race. Parking where crew are not permitted can lead to the runner's disqualification. docs.google.com
Pacer rules
Pacers are allowed from the start/finish aid station onward, and may join their runner only at crew-access aid stations after the start/finish aid station. Pacers do not check in or wear a special bib. Pacers may not carry items for their runner (water, food, packs): runners carry their own. Pacers leaving a car pay the park fee. docs.google.com
Drop bag rules
Clear Ziploc bag, 2.5 gallon maximum, labeled with name, bib number and the name of the aid station. Gym bags, duffels and plastic bins are not allowed. Bags are brought to the start on race morning and are not returned to the start/finish until late Sunday, after the aid station closes. Nothing is mailed. Anything left over is donated or thrown away. docs.google.com
Cutoff philosophy
Cutoffs are about safety, not about whether a runner is good enough or fast enough. All cutoff times are for leaving an aid station, not arriving at it. docs.google.com

What it looks like out there

Somebody has been out there with a camera the tables say the climb is long. these say what long feels like.

3 people have been out there with a camera or a microphone.

These are other people's work and we link straight to them. Watching costs nothing and needs no account. More of them: every race we hold, on film.

Ran this race? Tell the next runner what you know.

Nobody sees it until we have read it. No account, no sign-in.

Leave blank if it applies to the whole race.

Leave blank if it is not about one particular stop.

Optional. Something like “Cal Street, mile 62 to 78”.

Write it the way you would say it to someone at the start line.

Optional, and it decides nothing. It only tells the next runner where this is coming from.

This changes nothing on the page on its own. Somebody checks it against the race first.

Optional. Filled in for you when you start from a specific line on the page.

Copy it as it appears, so we can find it.

Required. Where it came from: the race email, the runner manual, what you saw on the day.

Ultras change. We will tell you when this one does.

Cutoffs move, races get postponed, lotteries open and close. We read the race's own sources and record where every fact came from. Put your email in and we will send you what changed, and where we read it.

No account, and nothing to cancel.

What happens to your email. Nothing else. I do not sell it, and I will not send you anything except this race changing. One click gets you out.

I keep this catalog because the information is scattered and hard to trust. Telling you when it moves is the same job.
