Who's going to Sinister 7 Ultra?

Free. You can start with nothing.

Free, and always will be. NavRun makes money from race-day planning for runners who want it, never from this. Ultras change constantly, sometimes the morning of. Always confirm with the race director and the official website before you rely on anything here.

The course

Where it goes point to point

Course line from the race's own GPX. Source file. Recorded 2026.

Teams of up to seven share the 100-mile course, one runner per leg. Relay runners go the same way as the solo field with the same 30 hour limit, and the race asks relay runners to be at the transition area about an hour before their teammate arrives.

The race rates Leg 6, Crowsnest + Seven Sisters, 7 out of 7 and Leg 7 as 1 out of 7. The highest point is on Leg 6. The race says to expect wet feet on Legs 2 to 6, and a runner who cannot finish in 15 hours will be running in the dark. Expect hot, exposed stretches by day, cold at night, and bears, cougars and wolves in the area. The trail types are paved road, gravel road, double track, single track and high alpine.

The race

What this one is

A mountain ultra through the Rocky Mountains of Crowsnest Pass, Alberta, with a 100-mile, a 50-mile, a 50 km and a half marathon. The 100 miles are split into seven legs, each built around a landmark of the area such as the Frank Slide and Seven Sisters Mountain, and can be run solo or as a relay of up to seven people. Solo runners have 30 hours for the 100 miles. The race is named for the Seven Sisters mountain that looms over much of the course.

The first Sinister 7 was run in 2008. The course has changed over the years: an original course from 2008 to 2010, a 148 km course from 2011 to 2013, and then a 100-mile course. In 2022 the 100-mile course was run in reverse.

Crew rules
A support crew is not required but is recommended for solo runners. Crews can meet runners at every transition area, which are reachable by vehicle, but should not meet them at checkpoints. sinistersports.ca
Pacer rules
Pacers are not allowed. A runner may run with a registered competitor who is on the same leg, and anyone may join a runner within 300 m of the end of a leg. sinistersports.ca
Drop bag rules
Teams may leave a drop bag at a transition area if they need to, but the race asks relay runners to carry what they need with their teammates. TA2 and TA3 share a bag, as do TA5 and TA6. sinistersports.ca
Cutoff philosophy
The race says its cutoffs are strict, with a couple of minutes of leeway at the race director's discretion in extreme circumstances. A team that will miss a cutoff can take a forced start and keep running as unranked. The cutoffs exist to keep a 30 hour race running smoothly. sinistersports.ca

What it looks like out there

Somebody has been out there with a camera the tables say the climb is long. these say what long feels like.

5 people have been out there with a camera or a microphone.

These are other people's work and we link straight to them. Watching costs nothing and needs no account. More of them: every race we hold, on film.

What you know every one of these is read by a person before it changes anything

Ran this race? Tell the next runner what you know.

Nobody sees it until we have read it. No account, no sign-in.

Leave blank if it applies to the whole race.

Leave blank if it is not about one particular stop.

Optional. Something like “Cal Street, mile 62 to 78”.

Write it the way you would say it to someone at the start line.

Optional, and it decides nothing. It only tells the next runner where this is coming from.

Optional.

Optional, and never shown on the page. Only so we can ask you a question about this note.

This changes nothing on the page on its own. Somebody checks it against the race first.

Optional. Filled in for you when you start from a specific line on the page.

Copy it as it appears, so we can find it.

Required. Where it came from: the race email, the runner manual, what you saw on the day.

Optional.

Optional. A screenshot or a photo of the sign works.

Somebody watches it before it goes anywhere near this page. What we are after is footage of this course, on the ground. If it would be just as true of any other race, it is not this.

Required. A line is plenty. Where the climbs are, what the footing does, what the last twenty miles look like.

Have the GPX? Send us the link.

We want the address of the file the race publishes, not the file. We download it from there so the page can say where the line came from.

Are you the race director? Get in touch and we'll make it right.

We read every one of these and we write back. Every fact here carries the source it came from, and the way a wrong one gets fixed is a person checking it against what you tell us.

Required, because this is a conversation and we write back.

Tell us what is wrong, out of date, or missing on this page. We read every one of these and we will get back to you.

Optional.

So we know who we are writing back to.

Optional. Director, assistant, comms, whoever you are.

Ultras change. We will tell you when this one does.

Cutoffs move, races get postponed, lotteries open and close. We read the race's own sources and record where every fact came from. Put your email in and we will send you what changed, and where we read it.

No account, and nothing to cancel.

What happens to your email. Nothing else. I do not sell it, and I will not send you anything except this race changing. One click gets you out.

I keep this catalog because the information is scattered and hard to trust. Telling you when it moves is the same job.
