Who's going to Midstate Massive Ultra Trail?

Free. You can start with nothing.

Free, and always will be. NavRun makes money from race-day planning for runners who want it, never from this. Ultras change constantly, sometimes the morning of. Always confirm with the race director and the official website before you rely on anything here.

The 50 Mile Midstate Massive starts at Rutland State Park's Long Pond Boat Ramp in Rutland, MA (also mile 51.8 of the 100 Mile course) and runs the same last ~48 miles of the Midstate Trail as the 100 Mile field, through Princeton, the Savage Hill Wildlife Management Area, and Douglas State Forest to the tri-state marker and the finish on the shore of Lake Wallum.

Trail / Dirt road: ~35 miles. Paved Road: ~15 miles. Road sections become more frequent beginning at Aid Station 9 (Moose Hill Rd.), with a final ~14 miles of mostly technical, rocky terrain through Douglas State Forest to the finish.

The race

What this one is

The Midstate Massive Ultra Trail is a point to point ultramarathon that follows the Massachusetts Midstate Trail during the peak of New England's autumn foliage, crossing from New Hampshire down through central Massachusetts to the Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island tri-state corner. The race offers 100 mile, 50 mile and 50K distances, all finishing together at Douglas State Forest.

New England Race Events launched the Midstate Massive Ultra Trail in 2019. The idea was introduced to race director Rich Mazzola by TMIRCE co-founder Andy Marx, based on the Fastest Known Time set on a self-supported traverse of the Midstate Trail by Greg Soutiea, Jake Dissinger and Chad Hornbaker in 2015 (23 hours, 43 minutes). The 2026 running is the race's 8th edition.

Crew rules
Crew is permitted only at designated Crew Support Aid Stations on this course: AS12 (Chase Corporation) and AS13 (Whittier Farms); AS7 (the start), AS8 and AS11 (50 and 100 Mile crews) are also Crew Support Aid Stations. No crews are allowed after Aid Station 13. Limit crew support to one vehicle per runner; a hang-tag from your race packet must be displayed on the crew vehicle. newenglandraceevents.com
Pacer rules
50 Mile pacers may join their runner at or after Aid Station 12 (Chase Corporation, mile 30.1) and may only enter or exit the course at a Crew Support Aid Station. You may have up to 2 pacers for the race but only 1 on course with you at any time.
Drop bag rules
One drop bag per runner, not exceeding 20"L x 12"W x 10"H or 35 liters, tagged with name and bib at check-in. For the 50 Mile, bags are transported to Aid Station 12 (Chase Corporation) and the Finish Line, and must be claimed by 5:00 PM Sunday. newenglandraceevents.com
Cutoff philosophy
Wave starts are what make this race possible. We start runners slowest to fastest for both the 100 and 50M events to minimize the impact to the trail and to ensure on-course support throughout each race. Aid Station cutoff times are based on this model. ... Final Aid Station 15 cutoff is 3:30 pm with 3.5 miles to the finish line. The course and Finish Line will be closed by 5:00 pm. newenglandraceevents.com

Ultras change. We will tell you when this one does.

Cutoffs move, races get postponed, lotteries open and close. We read the race's own sources and record where every fact came from. Put your email in and we will send you what changed, and where we read it.

No account, and nothing to cancel.

What happens to your email. Nothing else. I do not sell it, and I will not send you anything except this race changing. One click gets you out.

I keep this catalog because the information is scattered and hard to trust. Telling you when it moves is the same job.
