The 23rd running. The 100K set off at 5 AM and the 50K at 7 AM on Saturday 11 April, both from the Hawkeye Trailhead, with the 10K on the Friday evening and the 21K on the Sunday morning.
Free, and always will be. NavRun makes money from race-day planning for runners who want it, never from this.
Ultras change constantly, sometimes the morning of. Always confirm with the race director and the official website before you rely on anything here.

The course
Where it goes
loop · 7 aid stations · rust marks a stop your crew can reach
The 50K is a single loop of the Kokopelli trails in the Mack Ridge area with a lap of Rustler's Loop early on, so runners come through the Rustler's aid station twice. It rolls between 4,500 and 5,400 feet, climbs to Pizza Overlook and follows the rim in and out of the canyons above the Colorado River, then takes the Troybuilt trail and a last mile of dirt road back to the finish. The race puts the climbing at over 3,400 feet.
The course mixes gently rolling dirt road, soft dirt trail on Rustler's Loop, singletrack, and rocky, technical ground along the rim. The climb out of Troybuilt is the steep, hot one of the day. Runners share dirt roads with OHV, UTV and 4x4 traffic in places. Trekking poles are allowed for every distance, and have to be carried from the start rather than picked up later.
The race
What this one is
Desert RATS runs on the Kokopelli trails above the Colorado River outside Fruita, in the high desert of western Colorado. Four distances start and finish at the Hawkeye Trailhead across three days in April, with a 100K and a 50K on the Saturday and a 21K and a 10K either side of them. The 100K goes out to the Western Rim and back, on 4WD road, singletrack and rocky, sandy ground. It is a UTMB World Series event, so finishing the 100K, 50K or 21K earns Running Stones for the UTMB World Series Finals lottery, and a qualifying finish in the 100K counts for the Western States lottery.
The first Desert RATS Trail Running Festival ran in April 2004, as a 50 mile race with 36 finishers. A 50K joined it in 2014 and the 50 mile was last run in 2016. The 2020 edition was cancelled. The 100K was first run in 2024. The field has grown steadily: the 50K had 175 finishers in 2019 and 422 in 2026. The 2026 running was the 23rd.

Running, crewing, pacing or still deciding
How NavRun helps with Desert RATS Trail Running Festival by UTMB
Ten hours.
You are running it
You reach Rustler's 2, mile 9.8, and you already knew this morning what time that would be.
An arrival time for all 5 stations, worked out from your own training.
Crew are allowed only in the marked crew areas at the aid stations the race names, and nowhere else on the route. Only one person may assist a runner, and the assistance is handing over a bag of no more than 30 litres. Crew may not carry gear, food or fluid for a runner between aid stations. Crew may not run out of the area with their runner. Dogs are highly discouraged at crewing locations and must be on a leash.

Pacer rules
There are no pacers. The race organisation allows them only at events that include a 100 mile distance, and this festival does not have one.
res.cloudinary.com
Drop bag rules
Nothing is carried out on to the 50K course. There is a start and finish line bag, dropped at the start line and picked up at Basecamp afterwards.

Cutoff philosophy
Each runner has 10 hours. There is one cutoff on the way round, noon at Crossroads at mile 17.6, and the finish closes at 5 PM. The race sets its cutoffs on the safety of everyone out there, the remoteness of parts of the trail, and the access to it and its condition. A runner has to leave an aid station before its cutoff.

Nobody sees it until we have read it. No account, no sign-in.

This changes nothing on the page on its own. Somebody checks it against the race first.
Seen a course preview or a film of this one? Send it over.
Somebody watches it before it goes anywhere near this page. What we are after is footage of this course, on the ground. If it would be just as true of any other race, it is not this.
Have the GPX? Send us the link.
We want the address of the file the race publishes, not the file. We download it from there so the page can say where the line came from.
Are you the race director? Get in touch and we'll make it right.
We read every one of these and we write back. Every fact here carries the source it came from, and the way a wrong one gets fixed is a person checking it against what you tell us.
Where this came from.
Every fact on this page records its source and when we last checked it: 177 sources for this race. Hover a source link to read the sentence it came from.
59% of what we track for a course is filled in. The rest says "not checked yet" rather than guessing.
Ultras change. We will tell you when this one does.
Cutoffs move, races get postponed, lotteries open and close. We read the race's own sources and record where every fact came from. Put your email in and we will send you what changed, and where we read it.
No account, and nothing to cancel.
What happens to your email. Nothing else. I do not sell it, and I will not send you anything except this race changing. One click gets you out.
I keep this catalog because the information is scattered and hard to trust. Telling you when it moves is the same job.
