The 100K covers the 50K's ground and then keeps going, out along the Kokopelli Trail's 4WD road to the Western Rim and back. The first seventeen miles take in Rustler's Loop, Pizza Overlook and the rim above the Colorado River. Past Rabbit Valley the course turns into desert backcountry, rocky and sandy in places, with a Western Rim loop out to an unstaffed water drop at mile 44.7. Crew can reach two places on the course: Rustler's, at miles 6.2 and 9.8, and Rabbit Valley, at miles 32.5 and 51.2.

The course mixes gently rolling dirt road, gravel, the Kokopelli Trail 4WD road, singletrack, and rocky and sandy stretches, on the trails above the Colorado River. The race describes the ground as high desert with red slickrock cliff buttes. Runners share dirt roads with OHV, UTV and 4x4 traffic in places. Trekking poles are allowed for every distance, and have to be carried from the start rather than picked up later.

The race

What this one is

Desert RATS runs on the Kokopelli trails above the Colorado River outside Fruita, in the high desert of western Colorado. Four distances start and finish at the Hawkeye Trailhead across three days in April, with a 100K and a 50K on the Saturday and a 21K and a 10K either side of them. The 100K goes out to the Western Rim and back, on 4WD road, singletrack and rocky, sandy ground. It is a UTMB World Series event, so finishing the 100K, 50K or 21K earns Running Stones for the UTMB World Series Finals lottery, and a qualifying finish in the 100K counts for the Western States lottery.

The first Desert RATS Trail Running Festival ran in April 2004, as a 50 mile race with 36 finishers. A 50K joined it in 2014 and the 50 mile was last run in 2016. The 2020 edition was cancelled. The 100K was first run in 2024. The field has grown steadily: the 50K had 175 finishers in 2019 and 422 in 2026. The 2026 running was the 23rd.

Crew rules
Crew are allowed only in the marked crew areas at the aid stations the race names, and nowhere else on the route. Only one person may assist a runner, and the assistance is handing over a bag of no more than 30 litres. Crew may not carry gear, food or fluid for a runner between aid stations. Crew may not run out of the area with their runner. Dogs are highly discouraged at crewing locations and must be on a leash. res.cloudinary.com
Pacer rules
There are no pacers. The race organisation allows them only at events that include a 100 mile distance, and this festival does not have one. res.cloudinary.com
Drop bag rules
Drop bags go to the Rabbit Valley aid station, which the course reaches at mile 32.5 and again at mile 51.2. They are handed in near the start line on race morning and must carry the runner's name, bib number and the aid station name. Each bag has to fit through an 8 inch by 10 inch opening and be no longer than 16 inches. Poles are not allowed in any bag. Bags come back to Civic Center Park. There is a separate start and finish line bag for every distance, which stays at the start. res.cloudinary.com
Cutoff philosophy
Each runner has 20 hours. The chart carries five cutoffs on the way round, at Rabbit Valley at mile 32.5, at Western Rim on the way out and again on the way back, at Rabbit Valley again at mile 51.2 and at Salt Creek at mile 58.8, and the finish closes at 1 AM on the Sunday. The race sets them on the safety of everyone out there, the remoteness of parts of the trail, and the access to it and its condition. A runner has to leave an aid station before its cutoff. Finishing the 100K in 18 hours also earns a qualifier for the Western States lottery. res.cloudinary.com

Ultras change. We will tell you when this one does.

Cutoffs move, races get postponed, lotteries open and close. We read the race's own sources and record where every fact came from. Put your email in and we will send you what changed, and where we read it.

No account, and nothing to cancel.

What happens to your email. Nothing else. I do not sell it, and I will not send you anything except this race changing. One click gets you out.

I keep this catalog because the information is scattered and hard to trust. Telling you when it moves is the same job.
