An amazing journey through the history and vineyards of Chianti. The race leaves Radda in Chianti at four in the morning and the first 40 kilometres run through the hills of the Sienese Chianti among the vineyards. The second half climbs Monte Luco and then Monte San Michele, where the ground gets rougher, and 25 castles of the Ancient League of Chianti stand along the way back to Radda. The top two men and the top two women each take a Golden Ticket to the Western States Endurance Run.

The first 40 kilometres are fast and runnable. The hardest climbing waits until the second half, on Monte Luco and then Monte San Michele, and the last aid station at Villa San Michele sits at the top of the final major climb with about 15 kilometres left to run. The race's own profile puts the high point at 901 metres and the low point at 289 metres.

The race

What this one is

Chianti Ultra Trail by UTMB is run every March in the Tuscan hills, out of the medieval village of Radda in Chianti. The courses cross vineyards, castles and the white gravel roads of the Chianti Senese, and they save the hardest climbing, Monte Luco and Monte San Michele, for the second half. Three races leave the same start line on Piazza Francesco Ferrucci in Radda: the 123 km Ultra Trail Chianti Castles, which passes 25 castles of the Ancient League of Chianti and carries two Golden Tickets to the Western States Endurance Run in each of the men's and women's races, the 73 km Chianti Ultra Trail, and the 10 km Chianti Wine Run.

The first Chianti Ultra Trail was run over 73 kilometres on 24 March 2018, and 197 runners finished it. A longer race, the Ultra Trail Chianti Castles, was added in 2022. The event joined the UTMB World Series after five editions, and the organisers say it has sold out every year since the first.

Crew rules
A personal assistant is allowed at the aid stations marked for it on the course profile, in the area set aside for that use. Only one person may help, and the help is limited to handing over a bag of no more than 30 litres. The assistance zone begins 500 metres before the aid station and ends 500 metres after it. Outside those zones no assistance of any kind is allowed: no food, no drinks, no equipment. Access to the zone is allowed 15 minutes before the runner's estimated arrival, and no ticket or wristband is needed. chianti.utmb.world
Pacer rules
Nobody who is not registered for the race may accompany a runner along any part of the route, outside the marked spectator zones near the aid stations. chianti.utmb.world
Drop bag rules
Each athlete receives an official UTMB World Series drop bag at bib collection and attaches the bib number sticker to it. Only the official bags are carried. You will find your bag first at the Gaiole in Chianti aid station, and then again at the bag deposit in Radda in Chianti (Via degli Ulivi 1). Poles are not allowed in these bags. Bags must be collected within two hours after the end of the race, and unclaimed bags are not shipped on. chianti.utmb.world
Cutoff philosophy
Cut-off times are calculated to allow participants to reach the finish within the time limit. In order to be authorized to continue a race, all participants must leave the check point or aid station before the cut-off time, whatever their time of arrival at the check point. chianti.utmb.world
