Fifty six kilometres on closed public roads around the Cape Peninsula. The route runs south from Main Road in Newlands along the False Bay coast through Muizenberg, Kalk Bay and Fish Hoek, crosses to Noordhoek, climbs Chapman's Peak Drive into Hout Bay, then goes up Constantia Nek and Southern Cross Drive before dropping down Rhodes Drive past Kirstenbosch to the finish on the University of Cape Town rugby fields. Runners are seeded into 19 batches by their qualifying time and leave from 6 AM, and timing is gun to mat from their own batch. Nineteen hydration stations line the route, the first two carrying water only.

The first twenty kilometres along Main Road to Fish Hoek are flat and fast. The climbing is all in the second half: Chapman's Peak Drive from about 28 km, then Constantia Nek and Southern Cross Drive straight after the marathon mark, which is where the race is usually decided. Chet's Hill, near Kirstenbosch, is a small climb that turns into a real one at 54 km. The elevation profile on the race's route map runs from 3 metres to 242 metres. If Chapman's Peak Drive cannot be used, the race is diverted over Ou Kaapse Weg, and that decision can be made before the start or during the race.

The race

What this one is

The Totalsports Two Oceans Ultra Marathon powered by BYD is a 56 kilometre road race around the Cape Peninsula, from Main Road in Newlands to the rugby fields on the University of Cape Town's upper campus. It is run on closed roads through Muizenberg, Kalk Bay, Fish Hoek and Noordhoek, over Chapman's Peak Drive and up Constantia Nek, and the race has been called the world's most beautiful marathon for most of its life. Runners leave in seeded batches from 6 AM and have seven hours from their own batch's gun to be official finishers, with medals at four hours, five hours, six hours and seven hours. Finish it ten times and you earn a Blue Number, which is your race number for life.

The race began in 1970 as the Celtic 35 Mile Road Race, an initiative of the Celtic Harriers club, and became the Two Oceans Marathon. Women were first officially allowed to enter in 1975. The current route, finishing at the University of Cape Town, has been run since 1998; before that the race finished at the Brookside Sport Grounds. The men's course record of 3:03:44 was set in 1988 on that older route and still stands. In 2026 the ultra marathon was awarded the Golden Label certificate by the International Association of Ultrarunners.

Qualifying
Every ultra marathon entrant must run a qualifying marathon or a longer distance inside the times the race publishes: 42 km sub 5:00, 48 km sub 6:00, 50 km sub 6:30, 56.6 km sub 7:00, 90 km sub 12:00, and 100 km or longer sub 13:30. Crew rules
The refreshment stations should be adequate, but supporter points are allowed. A runner's seconds may stand at any refreshment station on the route and hand refreshments over while they remain stationary. No second may drive, cycle or run alongside a runner, no second may travel on the race route, and seconding may not be done from a vehicle, moving or stationary. Spectators are not allowed in the start area, and the Chapman's Peak stretch cannot be reached by car. media.twooceansmarathon.org.za
Pacer rules
Official pace setters run the race carrying flags showing the finish time they are running, and any runner is welcome to join a group. A runner may not bring their own pacer: non-entrants are not permitted to run on the route. twooceansmarathon.org.za
Drop bag rules
Tog bag facilities are available at the start, just after Dean Street at Great Westerford. You are issued two bands on arrival, one for the bag and one for your wrist, and no bag is released without a matching wristband. Take out anything you need before handing the bag in, because bags cannot be retrieved once submitted. Bags are collected at UCT Upper Campus after the finish. There are no drop bags on the route. twooceansmarathon.org.za
Cutoff philosophy
Cut-off times along the route are set primarily to ensure that roads can be reopened safely and on schedule. They also allow officials to identify runners who are unlikely to reach the next cut-off or the final finish cut-off within the allocated time, so that they can be safely withdrawn from the course. Cut-off times are not pacing guidelines: runners who pace themselves according to cut-off times risk arriving too late at subsequent points. The final cut-off is seven hours from the start gun time of the last batch, and every runner's own seven hours is measured from their own batch's gun. twooceansmarathon.org.za

I keep this catalog because the information is scattered and hard to trust. Telling you when it moves is the same job.
