The course

Where it goes point to point · 10 aid stations

No official GPX on file yet. These are the aid station coordinates, not the trail. Have the GPX? Send us the link.

There is no pre-requisite of competing or finishing any trail running event to participate in the T102. However, participating in ultra-trail running events will assist with your start group seeding. All participants of the T102 should be experienced in trail running... The course is tough, demanding and is remote in sections that can result in slower first aid / rescue response times. It is a combination of fire trail, narrow walking tracks, some very steep sections on staircases, ladders, river/creek crossings, dirt, on rock and sections that are rough under foot.

The race

What this one is

New Zealand's premier 100km run, taking runners through the heart of Tarawera, passing glistening lakes and through lush native bush, with never ending support along the way. The iconic point-to-point course starts in Kawerau and finishes in Rotorua, taking in 5 stunning lakes, and running beneath the mighty maunga of Tarawera, Ruawahia and Wahanga.

Crew rules
Your support crew can be a big part of your day at Tarawera Ultra-Trail by UTMB, and they're more than welcome to help get you through your Tarawera journey. Support crews can see you and assist you at specific aid stations, but may not assist you outside of these points. Assistance can include moral and verbal support, physical support, food and nutrition, hydration, and gear and equipment changes. Support crews can only assist their athletes at the Aid Stations indicated with spectator access. This includes 200m either side of the Aid Station on course. Outside of these areas support crews cannot provide material support (physical, nutritional, gear or otherwise) to athletes on course. If you intend to meet your support crew at an Aid Station, do not use the drop bag service for this Aid Station. Many roads that access Aid Stations are rural and narrow, windy roads. The actions of the support crew are the responsibility of the athlete. tarawera.utmb.world

Drop bag rules
Drop bags may be left at Otamuri (41.7km), Okataina (57.3km), Tikitapu / Blue Lake (84.5km) and the Village Green Finish Line (101.6km). Drop bags must be dropped at the designated area at Athlete Check-In before 8:00pm Friday. A bag may also be dropped at the start line on race morning, which will be transported back to the finish venue. tarawera.utmb.world
Cutoff philosophy
Select the Time Charts tabs to view the cut-off times for leaving the relevant Aid Station. Time Charts show estimated fastest and slowest times for each race leg and should be used as a guide only. Where the slowest times are greater than cut-off time, the cut-off time will supersede the slowest expected estimates. If you miss the cut-off then you must follow the directions of officials. Please note that in bad weather conditions, cut-offs may need to be brought forward during the event. tarawera.utmb.world

What it looks like out there

Somebody has been out there with a camera the tables say the climb is long. these say what long feels like.

2 people have been out there with a camera or a microphone.

These are other people's work and we link straight to them. Watching costs nothing and needs no account. More of them: every race we hold, on film.

What you know every one of these is read by a person before it changes anything

Ran this race? Tell the next runner what you know.

Nobody sees it until we have read it. No account, no sign-in.

Leave blank if it applies to the whole race.

Leave blank if it is not about one particular stop.

Optional. Something like “Cal Street, mile 62 to 78”.

Write it the way you would say it to someone at the start line.

Optional, and it decides nothing. It only tells the next runner where this is coming from.

This changes nothing on the page on its own. Somebody checks it against the race first.

Optional. Filled in for you when you start from a specific line on the page.

Copy it as it appears, so we can find it.

Required. Where it came from: the race email, the runner manual, what you saw on the day.

Somebody watches it before it goes anywhere near this page. What we are after is footage of this course, on the ground. If it would be just as true of any other race, it is not this.

Required. A line is plenty. Where the climbs are, what the footing does, what the last twenty miles look like.

We read every one of these and we write back. Every fact here carries the source it came from, and the way a wrong one gets fixed is a person checking it against what you tell us.
