Known to be the toughest 50K in the USA, this course has a total of 11,400 feet of elevation gain. A series of climbs brings runners breathtaking views at the summit of Snowbird, Baldy and Hidden Peak. Venture through the Snowbird tunnel and kiss the speedgoat at mile 24. Cap off your race with a high five from the race director at the Main Plaza at Snowbird.

Thirty-two and a half miles with about 11,300 feet of climbing, almost all of it above 7,500 feet and topping out around 11,000 feet at Hidden Peak and Baldy. The race's own medical notes say runners may feel nausea and vomiting out there, most often from over-hydration, under-hydration, heat stress and altitude exposure, and ask runners to drink to thirst. Sections run on dirt roads shared with off-road vehicles.

The race

What this one is

Speedgoat is Karl Meltzer's race, run entirely inside Snowbird ski resort in Little Cottonwood Canyon, and its 50K is widely called the toughest in the country: 32.5 miles and about 11,300 feet of climbing, almost all of it above 7,500 feet, over the summits of Snowbird, Baldy and Hidden Peak. There are three shorter distances off the same start line, a 30K and a 10K on the Friday and The Summit, a straight climb to Hidden Peak, on the Saturday. Everything happens at the resort, so lodging, parking, the expo, the start and the finish are all within a few minutes' walk, and crew and family ride the aerial tram to watch from the top.

Karl Meltzer founded the Speedgoat 50K at Snowbird in 2008 and built it to be hard, and it has run every July since. It joined the UTMB World Series, which brought Running Stones, a place in the road to Chamonix and three more distances alongside the original 50K. The 2026 race was the nineteenth edition, and Meltzer is still the founder listed in the race's own guides.

Crew rules
Crew can meet a runner at Hidden Peak, which the course passes twice, and at the Tunnel aid station. Both are reached on the Snowbird aerial tram from the Plaza Deck, not by road, and crew for the Tunnel ride to the summit and walk down. Everyone riding the tram signs a waiver. One person may help a runner, in the area set aside for it, and may hand over a bag of up to 30 litres. The assistance zone runs from 500 m before to 500 m after an aid station and nowhere else. Crew may give small care, a massage or treating a blister, while the runner sits on a chair, but never medical treatment. There is no drop-bag service from crew. res.cloudinary.com
Pacer rules
The race regulations allow pacers in 100 mile events only, so no distance at Speedgoat has them. res.cloudinary.com
Drop bag rules
There are no drop bags at any aid station, at any distance. Plan to carry the nutrition and gear you need, or meet your crew at a crew-access aid station. A spare bag area at Basecamp holds post-race kit for the start and finish only, and those bags are not moved out onto the course. Anything left after 7:00 PM on Saturday 25 July 2026 goes to a local organisation. res.cloudinary.com
Cutoff philosophy
Cut-off times are calculated for the safety of everyone out there, runners, volunteers, medical staff and search and rescue, and for how remote, how reachable and what condition certain sections of trail are in. Each runner has 13 hours to complete the course, with intermediate cut-offs at Hidden Peak, Mineral Basin, Tunnel and Hidden Peak again. res.cloudinary.com

Ultras change. We will tell you when this one does.

Cutoffs move, races get postponed, lotteries open and close. We read the race's own sources and record where every fact came from. Put your email in and we will send you what changed, and where we read it.

What happens to your email. Nothing else. I do not sell it, and I will not send you anything except this race changing. One click gets you out.

I keep this catalog because the information is scattered and hard to trust. Telling you when it moves is the same job.
