Who's going to Southern States 200?

Free. You can start with nothing.

Free, and always will be. NavRun makes money from race-day planning for runners who want it, never from this. Ultras change constantly, sometimes the morning of. Always confirm with the race director and the official website before you rely on anything here.

The course

Where it goes point to point · 18 aid stations · rust marks a stop your crew can reach

No official GPX on file yet. These are the aid station coordinates, not the trail. Have the GPX? Send us the link.

A continuous 200-mile point-to-point run on the Pinhoti Trail, from Mill Creek near Dalton, Georgia, through the Chattahoochee and Talladega National Forests to Bald Rock Lodge atop Mount Cheaha, Alabama's highest point. It is not a stage race: runners have 100 hours. Aid stations serve made-to-order hot food around the clock, and five of them are heated sleep stations with pads and bags.

Aid stations run up to 14.6 miles apart in places. Much of the Pinhoti Trail is under canopy, so GPS is less accurate; the course is marked but runners must carry the GPX. Headphones are allowed on trails but must come out on road sections, road crossings and when approaching aid stations. Times on all charts are Eastern, including after the course crosses into Alabama.

Crew rules
Crew may help only at crew-accessible aid stations, never elsewhere on the course. Crew may not arrive more than 30 minutes before their runner at stations with limited parking (Snake Creek Gap, High Point GA and Cave Spring are the exceptions). Crew cars must show a Southern States 200 Crew Car Pass on the dash with the runner's name and number. Crew may not take food or drink from aid stations, and young children and pets are not allowed inside aid station tents or pavilions. Vehicles over 24 feet may not enter any aid station. Runners caught in a crew car away from a crew-accessible aid station are disqualified. southernstates200.com
Pacer rules
Runners may have pacers from High Point, Georgia. Runners 65 or older may have a pacer for the entire race. Pacers start and stop only at crew-accessible aid stations, wear the runner's pacer bib, sign a release, check in and out with aid station staff, carry all mandatory gear except the SPOT tracker, and stay with their runner. Pacers registered for the Southern States 100 may start from Cave Spring. southernstates200.com
Drop bag rules
Drop bags may be left at the 12 drop bag aid stations. Maximum 12 x 16 x 24 inches. No ice chests, Styrofoam or large tubs; trash bags are discouraged. Each bag must show the runner's name, bib number and aid station. Bags are returned to Bald Rock Lodge after the aid stations close. southernstates200.com
Cutoff philosophy
The race calls its cutoffs very generous: a strong walker can finish within them without running a step. southernstates200.com

What it looks like out there

Somebody has been out there with a camera the tables say the climb is long. these say what long feels like.

2 people have been out there with a camera or a microphone.

These are other people's work and we link straight to them. Watching costs nothing and needs no account. More of them: every race we hold, on film.

Nobody sees it until we have read it. No account, no sign-in.

Leave blank if it applies to the whole race.

Leave blank if it is not about one particular stop.

Optional. Something like “Cal Street, mile 62 to 78”.

Write it the way you would say it to someone at the start line.

Optional, and it decides nothing. It only tells the next runner where this is coming from.

This changes nothing on the page on its own. Somebody checks it against the race first.

Ultras change. We will tell you when this one does.

Cutoffs move, races get postponed, lotteries open and close. We read the race's own sources and record where every fact came from. Put your email in and we will send you what changed, and where we read it.

No account, and nothing to cancel.

What happens to your email. Nothing else. I do not sell it, and I will not send you anything except this race changing. One click gets you out.

I keep this catalog because the information is scattered and hard to trust. Telling you when it moves is the same job.
