The 50K starts and finishes in the centre of the Big Bear Village at Basecamp. After an ascent up the face of Snow Summit early in the race, it settles into the smooth rolling singletrack of the Skyline Trail, winding through granite boulders and along a ridge with views from the mountains down to Big Bear Lake.
The race gives the 50K as 11 miles of dirt road, 18 miles of trail and 1 mile of asphalt. Big Bear sits at 7,000 feet and most of the course is higher, so the days are warm and the nights are cold.
Kodiak runs on the trails above Big Bear Lake, in the San Bernardino Mountains a couple of hours from Los Angeles. The 100K, 50K, 21K and 10K all start and finish in the middle of the Village of Big Bear Lake, so the start line, the finish line and the festival are the same place. The courses climb the south shore trails: Snow Summit, the Skyline Trail, Bluff Lake, and for the 100K, Sugarloaf Mountain at 9,995 feet. Most of the running is above 7,000 feet, on dirt roads and singletrack through alpine forest, with the lake below you for most of the day.
The first Kodiak was run in 2013. It is now part of the UTMB World Series, and in 2026 it is the UTMB World Series Americas Major, which doubles the Running Stones a finisher collects. Finishing the 100K under 18 hours also earns a 2027 Western States qualifier.

Parking. Runners park at Sandalwood Lot 1, 103 Sandalwood Drive, Big Bear Lake, and take the shuttle to the start. Runners may not park in the Village. Supporters may park in the Village temporarily to watch the start, and after 11 AM on Saturday they use the shuttle from Snow Summit, 880 Summit Blvd.
