Free. You can start with nothing.

Free, and always will be. NavRun makes money from race-day planning for runners who want it, never from this. Ultras change constantly, sometimes the morning of. Always confirm with the race director and the official website before you rely on anything here.

Course line from the race's own GPX. Source file. Year of this file not known.

A 105.8-mile point-to-point from the Tiger Mine Trailhead near Oracle to Superior, almost entirely on remote singletrack through classic Sonoran Desert terrain, on National Forest lands. Non-stop with a 36 hour limit.

Temperatures can vary from 10F at night in the mountains to 100+F in the desert during the day. There are very few streams or other water sources between the aid stations. In one segment, runners must go over 20 miles between full aid stations while carrying required and recommended gear and water. Much of the terrain is rugged and remote, with very exposed sections, dangerous cliffs, potential for rock fall, snakes, spiders, scorpions and wildlife.

The race

What this one is

El Jefe 100 is a 105.8-mile point-to-point run on remote singletrack through classic Sonoran Desert terrain in southern Arizona, all on National Forest lands. It starts at the Tiger Mine Trailhead near Oracle and ends in Superior. Runners have 36 hours and 6 aid stations. It takes place the same week as the Arizona Monster 300, on a portion of the same course.

Destination Trail announced El Jefe 100 on May 5, 2026 as its newest desert race, with a first edition in April 2027. It was built for runners eyeing the 200 and 300 mile distances who thought: not yet.

Crew rules
Crew are allowed only at crew access aid stations (Freeman, Grand Enchantment, Gila River and the finish). Only one crew vehicle per runner, parked legally, with the crew parking pass displayed in the front window; passes are issued at runner check-in to runners whose crew completed the crew form. No vehicle over 20 ft long or 8.5 ft wide, no RVs that exceed that, no trailers. Time your arrival with live tracking, no more than a half hour before your runner. No crew camping at aid stations, and crew must leave when the runner leaves. Crew contact between aid stations, or after a station's cut off, disqualifies the runner. Neither crew nor pacer is needed to finish. docs.google.com
Pacer rules
Pacing begins at the Grand Enchantment aid station and runs to the finish. Pacers join and leave only at crew access aid stations and must be on foot. Only one pacer at a time. Pacers must carry the mandatory gear (a pacer supplies their own bivy and wag bag), wear a pacer bib, and may not carry the runner's gear, food or water. docs.google.com
Drop bag rules
Drop bags are optional and can be used at some locations and not others. Maximum size 16 inches by 24 inches by 10 inches; re-closeable and sturdy; no coolers. Label with full name, bib number and aid station name(s). Drop bags are not mailed after the event; those not collected at the aid stations are donated or disposed of. docs.google.com
Cutoff philosophy
This is a non stop event. When the run starts the clock does not stop until 36 hours later. Runners must leave each aid station before the designated cut off to continue. docs.google.com

What it looks like out there

Somebody has been out there with a camera the tables say the climb is long. these say what long feels like.

3 people have been out there with a camera or a microphone.

These are other people's work and we link straight to them. Watching costs nothing and needs no account. More of them: every race we hold, on film.

Ran this race? Tell the next runner what you know.

Nobody sees it until we have read it. No account, no sign-in.

Leave blank if it applies to the whole race.

Leave blank if it is not about one particular stop.

Optional. Something like “Cal Street, mile 62 to 78”.

Write it the way you would say it to someone at the start line.

Optional, and it decides nothing. It only tells the next runner where this is coming from.

This changes nothing on the page on its own. Somebody checks it against the race first.

Ultras change. We will tell you when this one does.

Cutoffs move, races get postponed, lotteries open and close. We read the race's own sources and record where every fact came from. Put your email in and we will send you what changed, and where we read it.

No account, and nothing to cancel.

What happens to your email. Nothing else. I do not sell it, and I will not send you anything except this race changing. One click gets you out.

I keep this catalog because the information is scattered and hard to trust. Telling you when it moves is the same job.
