One loop of 103.5 miles around the Pine Creek watershed, starting and finishing at Little Pine State Park. The route links the Mid State Trail, the Black Forest Trail, the West Rim Trail, the Donut Hole Trail, the T-Squared Trail, the Long Branch Trail and the Tiadaghton Trail, with 21,000 feet of climbing and the same again of descent. Runners get 36 hours.

The race calls it graduate-level trail running. The climbs run 900 to 1,200 feet and the descents match them, and the race puts the course at 98% single and double track. Plotaroute splits the grade as 6.3 miles flat, 49.7 miles uphill and 46.19 miles downhill. The longest climb is 2.4 miles from mile 26.8 on Browns Run Trail; the longest descent is 1.9 miles from mile 5.5 on the Mid State Trail; the steepest pitch is 40% above Dam Run Road at mile 4.2.

The race

What this one is

Eastern States 100 is a 103.5 mile loop around the Pine Creek watershed in the Pennsylvania Wilds, starting and finishing at Little Pine State Park in Waterville. It strings together the Mid State Trail, the Black Forest Trail and the West Rim Trail, with 21,000 feet of climbing, rock underfoot and August heat and humidity. Runners get 36 hours. Since 2014 about half the field has finished, and in hot years it drops into the thirties.

The first Eastern States 100 was run in 2014. It has been held ten times through 2026; the 2018, 2020 and 2024 editions were cancelled. The aid stations have moved over the years. Halfway House at the PA-44 crossing gave way to Big Trail in 2021, and Algerine and Long Branch were both replaced by Cedar Run in 2023. In 2026 a woman won the race outright for the first time, and it was the first sub-24 hour women's finish in the race's history.

Crew rules
Crews and spectators may only be at Lower Pine Bottom, Hyner Run, Tomb Flats and Blackwell. From 2026 they are not permitted at Barrens. Meeting a runner anywhere else, including road crossings, trailheads, parking areas and forest roads, disqualifies the runner and bars them from Eastern States Trail-Endurance Alliance events for three years. This is a condition of the race's permits with the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. One crew vehicle per runner. Pets are welcome with the crew and at the start and finish, on a leash. easternstates100.com
Pacer rules
Pacers may join at Hyner Run at mile 43.6, Tomb Flats at mile 63.3 or Blackwell at mile 80.9. From 2026 they can no longer enter or leave at Barrens. Pacers register online with an emergency contact and waiver, pick their bib up at the aid station where they start, and check in and out with the communications crew like the runners do. One pacer at a time. They may run beside or behind a runner but not in front, and they may not carry food, water or anything else. easternstates100.com
Drop bag rules
Drop bags go to five stations: Lower Pine Bottom, Hyner Run, Tomb Flats, Blackwell and Barrens. They are handed in on Saturday morning only, at the pavilion at the far end of the parking lot from registration. Keep a bag to 10 inches by 16 inches by 6 inches deep or smaller. No duffel bags, suitcases, five-gallon buckets or coolers. easternstates100.com
Cutoff philosophy
Cutoff times are departure times, not arrival times: a runner has to be out of the station by the posted time. Aid station captains enforce them and their decisions are final. The chart publishes the opening time and the projected closing time for every station beside the cutoff, so a runner can see how much room the clock leaves at each stop. easternstates100.com
