The course

Where it goes out and back · 22 aid stations · rust marks a stop your crew can reach

Out from Camp Morganton in Blue Ridge to a turnaround at Burnett Gap above Blairsville and back the same way, with a counterclockwise lap of the Flat Creek Loop near each end. The first 34 miles run the Benton MacKaye Trail; from Rhodes Mountain the course joins the Duncan Ridge Trail and the Dragon's Spine, climbs Coosa Bald at 4,256 feet and drops 2,000 feet to Wolf Creek, then turns around and does all of it again in reverse. Twenty aid stations, 2.7 to 7.6 miles apart, and 48 hours. A finish qualifies a runner for the Western States 100 and Hardrock 100 lotteries.

Thirty thousand feet of climbing and the same again of descent over 103.9 miles, with the steepest of it on the Duncan Ridge Trail. The manual names the black bears, wild hogs, rattlesnakes, copperheads, water moccasins, ground nesting yellow jackets, wood ticks and poison ivy the course runs through. Two sections of paved road and several road crossings mean reflective gear on your back is required.

Crew rules
Crews may only use crew accessible aid stations: Old Dial Road, Wilscot Gap, Stanley Gap and Wolf Creek. Only one car per crew at each aid station. Crews will not park in a manner that blocks traffic, trailheads or other cars, and will not leave a car parked at an aid station. Runners may only receive aid at designated aid stations, and may not receive aid from or be paced by vehicles on road sections. A crew that breaks these rules can get their runner disqualified. dumassevents.com
Pacer rules
A pacer may join at any crew access aid station after the turnaround, which means Wolf Creek at 51.8 miles once the bib punch is verified, then Wilscot Gap, Old Dial Road and Stanley Gap. One pacer at a time. Pacers must be at least 18, wear a Pacer bib and complete a waiver, identify themselves at control points, stay with their runner except in an emergency, and leave the course if their runner withdraws. They enter and leave each aid station with their runner. Muling is expressly forbidden: a pacer may not carry water, food, lights, shoes, clothing or other supplies for anyone but themselves, and may give no mechanical or physical assistance. dumassevents.com
Drop bag rules
Bring drop bags to the start and the race transports them to the right aid stations. Label each bag with your name, bib number and drop bag location; tape lettering on fabric does not always stay put. Drop bags go to Wilscot Gap and Wolf Creek, both of which a runner passes twice. There is no size limit, but the manual asks runners to be reasonable and courteous to the other runners bringing a bag and to the volunteers sorting them. Bags come back to Camp Morganton as each aid station closes, or crew can collect them at the aid station. dumassevents.com
Cutoff philosophy
Every aid station past the first has a published cut off time and the race explains them as a safety measure: the Cruel Jewel 100 is laid out for tough and experienced trail runners, therefore there will be strict cut off times at all aid stations put in place for your safety. The clock runs from noon on Friday to noon on Sunday. In 2026 the last finisher came in at 47:14:14. dumassevents.com
