Who's going to Cowboy 200?

Free. You can start with nothing.

Free, and always will be. NavRun makes money from race-day planning for runners who want it, never from this. Ultras change constantly, sometimes the morning of. Always confirm with the race director and the official website before you rely on anything here.

The full Cowboy 200: a point-to-point start in Norfolk at 6:00 AM Friday and a finish at Bolo Beer Co. in Valentine, with zero repetition. Eleven full aid stations and eight unmanned water stations along the way, and three sleep stations at Atkinson, Long Pine and Wood Lake.

The Cowboy Trail is an old rail trail, non-technical and, in the race's words, extraordinarily flat, run on crushed limestone with short paved sections through towns. Several reroutes leave the trail for backroads (paved, dirt and minimum-maintenance road) around bridges damaged by flooding, between Oakdale and Clearwater. The longest stretch between full aid stations is Neligh to Ewing. After Wood Lake there is no full aid station until the finish.

The race

What this one is

A point-to-point 200-mile footrace on the Cowboy Trail, a converted rail line across northern Nebraska, run on crushed limestone from Norfolk west to Valentine with no repeated ground. The trail crosses more than 200 former railway bridges, including one a quarter-mile long and over 148 feet high, and passes through small towns that still hold depots and other relics of the old railroad. It also offers a 100-mile option that starts a day later and partway along the same trail, in Atkinson.

The race was first run in November 2022. Editions since 2023 have run in September.

Crew rules
Crew may assist runners only at designated full aid stations, never at unmanned stations or anywhere else on the course, and runners may enter a crew vehicle only at those stations. One standard-size vehicle per runner. Vehicles must fit in one standard parking space (9 ft by 18 ft); Class A and Class C motorhomes, travel trailers, fifth wheels, tow-behind campers and similar setups are not allowed at any aid station. Arrive shortly before your runner and leave after they depart. Aid station food and drink is for runners and active pacers, not crew. docs.google.com
Pacer rules
Pacers are allowed from Ewing (mile 64.4). They may start, stop or change only at aid stations marked Pacer = Yes in the chart, must be on foot, and must be able to cover the whole distance between legal pacer-access stations with the runner. One pacer at a time. Pacers are not required to carry the runner kit list, though safety gear is strongly recommended. No muling: pacers may not carry the runner's gear, food, water or trash. docs.google.com
Drop bag rules
Drop bags go to full aid stations; some travel to a second station: Bag A Tilden then Long Pine, Bag B Neligh then Ainsworth, Bag C Ewing then Wood Lake, Bag D O'Neill, Bag E Atkinson, Bag F Stuart, Bag G Bassett. Label each bag with runner name, bag letter and destination town(s), and bib number. No glass. Bags must close securely; oversized bags are not transported. Uncrewed runners may also leave one carry-on-sized bag for the finish. docs.google.com
Cutoff philosophy
Cutoffs at the full aid stations are check-out times: you must have left the station by the listed time. The intermediate cutoffs are not spaced evenly. Some sections ask for faster progress so that the later sleep stations give you more usable time. docs.google.com

What it looks like out there

Somebody has been out there with a camera the tables say the climb is long. these say what long feels like.

8 people have been out there with a camera or a microphone.

These are other people's work and we link straight to them. Watching costs nothing and needs no account. More of them: every race we hold, on film.
