The course

Where it goes multi-loop · 7 aid stations · rust marks a stop your crew can reach

Course line from the race's own GPX. Source file. Year of this file not known.

A 50K made of the 25K loop run twice, mostly singletrack through old growth coastal rainforest with creek crossings and views of the Pacific.

Trails were built for horses, so they drain well and the climbs and descents are neither terribly steep nor technical. Shallow tree roots and rocks appear in places. The main fork of Berry Creek is a 10 foot wide, 4-6 inch deep crossing on foot with no bridge. A runner not through Horse Creek Aid #3 by its cutoff can take a 25K finish time.

The race

What this one is

Cape Mountain Trail Runs are 50K, 25K and 10K loop races in the Siuslaw National Forest, 15 miles north of Florence on the Oregon coast. The courses run old growth rainforest, creek canyons and coastal headland meadows on dirt singletrack above the Pacific, from Horse Creek Campground.

Since 2003 the event has been a local fundraiser for the Siuslaw High School Cross Country program in Florence. It is the second of three races in the Oregon Coast Trail Series.

Pacer rules
The event permit does not allow pacers. daybreakracing.com

One drop bag per runner at Dry Lake and one at Horse Creek. Bag smaller than a 20L daypack, water resistant, labelled with first name, last name and bib number. Dry Lake bags are returned to the Start/Finish after the aid station closes. daybreakracing.com
Cutoff philosophy
Race cutoffs exist for several reasons, primarily safety and keeping the race on its permitted schedule. Cutoff times indicate when a runner must leave the aid station. daybreakracing.com

What it looks like out there

Somebody has been out there with a camera the tables say the climb is long. these say what long feels like.

2 people have been out there with a camera or a microphone.

These are other people's work and we link straight to them. Watching costs nothing and needs no account. More of them: every race we hold, on film.

Ran this race? Tell the next runner what you know.

Nobody sees it until we have read it. No account, no sign-in.

Leave blank if it applies to the whole race.

Leave blank if it is not about one particular stop.

Optional. Something like “Cal Street, mile 62 to 78”.

Write it the way you would say it to someone at the start line.

Optional, and it decides nothing. It only tells the next runner where this is coming from.

This changes nothing on the page on its own. Somebody checks it against the race first.

Ultras change. We will tell you when this one does.

Cutoffs move, races get postponed, lotteries open and close. We read the race's own sources and record where every fact came from. Put your email in and we will send you what changed, and where we read it.

No account, and nothing to cancel.

What happens to your email. Nothing else. I do not sell it, and I will not send you anything except this race changing. One click gets you out.

I keep this catalog because the information is scattered and hard to trust. Telling you when it moves is the same job.
