Who's going to Wild Duluth Races?

Free. You can start with nothing.

Free, and always will be. NavRun makes money from race-day planning for runners who want it, never from this. Ultras change constantly, sometimes the morning of. Always confirm with the race director and the official website before you rely on anything here.

The course

Where it goes out and back · 8 aid stations · rust marks a stop your crew can reach

Course line from the race's own GPX. Source file. Recorded 2022.

Wild Duluth 100K starts at Bayfront Park, runs the 50K course in reverse out to the turnaround at Oldenburg Point in Jay Cooke State Park, then follows the 50K course back to the finish at Bayfront Park. It stays on the Superior Hiking Trail except for short spurts up to the Magney-Snively aid station and down to the base of Spirit Mountain.

The trail is extremely rugged, hilly and laced with rocks and roots throughout. Many veteran ultrarunners consider this the toughest 50K and 100K course in the Midwest. The trail will be covered in leaves in mid-October, so watch your footing. Runners meet each other on the trail in both directions; runners going uphill step off for those coming downhill. The race describes the 100K as almost 10,000 ft of climbing.

The race

What this one is

Rugged 50K and 100K ultramarathons on Saturday, with the Harder 'n Heck Half Marathon and the Terribly Tough 10K on Sunday. The 50K and 100K follow the Superior Hiking Trail through the city of Duluth, high above the St. Louis River, the harbor and Lake Superior, and finish at Bayfront Park.

The 50K and 100K were established in 2009. The Half Marathon followed in 2010 and the 10K was added in 2019.

Crew rules
Crews may only provide aid to runners at designated aid stations. Crews are not allowed at the Grand Portage aid station and runners whose crews go there may be disqualified. Limit your crew to one vehicle. Crews may meet runners at the base of Spirit Mountain, which is not an official aid station. A Minnesota state park pass is needed in Jay Cooke State Park (Oldenburg Point). wildduluthraces.com
Pacer rules
Pacers can join at the Munger Trail aid station at mile 40.5. Multiple pacers are allowed, one at a time, and pacers do not need a bib. Pacer changes can only be made at designated aid stations. Pacers may not carry water, food, flashlights, shoes, clothing or supplies for anyone but themselves, and may not give mechanical or physical assistance. wildduluthraces.com
Drop bag rules
Drop bags can be left at the Highland/Getchell Rd and Munger Trail aid stations and at the Oldenburg Point turnaround. Drop bags may be accessed at miles 8.3, 19.7, 31.0, 40.5 and 51.9. Leave them at check-in on Friday night (preferred) or at the check-in table by 5:30 a.m. race morning. Bags must be clearly marked and secure, with your name, race number and the location where you want them to go. All drop bags are brought back to the Bayfront Park finish as soon as the aid station closes. wildduluthraces.com
Cutoff philosophy
Runners have until midnight to finish. Cutoff times are enforced at the turnaround and at miles 46 and 53 by the aid station captain, and their decisions are final. wildduluthraces.com

What it looks like out there

Somebody has been out there with a camera the tables say the climb is long. these say what long feels like.

2 people have been out there with a camera or a microphone.

These are other people's work and we link straight to them. Watching costs nothing and needs no account. More of them: every race we hold, on film.

Nobody sees it until we have read it. No account, no sign-in.

Leave blank if it applies to the whole race.

Leave blank if it is not about one particular stop.

Optional. Something like “Cal Street, mile 62 to 78”.

Write it the way you would say it to someone at the start line.

Optional, and it decides nothing. It only tells the next runner where this is coming from.

Ultras change. We will tell you when this one does.

Cutoffs move, races get postponed, lotteries open and close. We read the race's own sources and record where every fact came from. Put your email in and we will send you what changed, and where we read it.

No account, and nothing to cancel.

What happens to your email. Nothing else. I do not sell it, and I will not send you anything except this race changing. One click gets you out.

I keep this catalog because the information is scattered and hard to trust. Telling you when it moves is the same job.
