The course

Course line from the race's own GPX. Source file. Year of this file not known.

100 miles on foot along the Thames Path National Trail, point to point from Richmond in south-west London to the centre of Oxford. The route follows the river against its flow, flat and fast on groomed paths, trails and paved pathway, and finishes in the grounds of Queen's College, Oxford University. Marked course, 12 aid stations and a 30 hour limit.

1900 feet of total gain over the 100 miles, so major elevation change is not the obstacle. The flat course brings its own challenges for runners unused to so little change and so much repetition. Roughly 75% is on trail and 25% on paved sections or tarmac road. The only climbing or descending is a brief rise in one or two places and stairs over bridges or roads. In wet weather some trail sections become very muddy and the river may flood, in which case course changes are communicated to runners. There are multiple road crossings, some busy, and they are not marshalled. Much of the path is on private land, with gates and stiles throughout. The course is never far from a road, but some stretches can be remote.

The race

What this one is

A 100 mile continuous trail race along the Thames Path from London to Oxford. It starts on the river at Richmond and finishes in the grounds of Queen's College, Oxford University. 12 aid stations and a 30 hour limit.

First run on 3 March 2012.

Crew rules
Crews may meet runners only at the listed crew points. Being crewed anywhere else risks a one hour penalty, disqualification or a ban, and the runner is responsible for their crew. Crew vehicles can be no bigger than a long wheel base transit or transporter, and no motorhomes. Under no circumstances should crew or supporters attend Goring or Streatley villages at mile 70 to 71. Cut-offs apply only at aid stations. Crews are in no way essential at this event. centurionrunning.com
Pacer rules
Pacers are allowed from the Henley aid station at mile 51 to the finish. On foot only, with one pacer with the runner at a time and several pacers allowed over the last 49 miles. Pacers may join or hand over only at the listed crew points, must be at least 18, and must enter and leave each aid station with their runner. centurionrunning.com
Drop bag rules
Drop bags go to Henley (mile 51), Goring (mile 71) and the finish, one bag per aid station, deposited at the start between 0700 and 0845 on race morning. Maximum 50cm x 30cm x 30cm, labelled with name, aid station and race number. A finish line bag of up to 50 litres can be left at registration and goes straight to the finish. Collect from the finish on Sunday; anything left after 1500 may be disposed of. centurionrunning.com
Cutoff philosophy
Runners must finish within a 30 hour time limit. There are cut offs at every aid station on route, designed with the purpose of keeping runners on course to finish within that 30 hour limit. centurionrunning.com
