The course

Where it goes point to point · 29 aid stations · rust marks a stop your crew can reach

Course line from the race's own GPX. Source file. Recorded 2026.

A single-loop point-to-point route that leaves the San Pasqual Valley staging area near Escondido and runs through Lake Hodges, Del Mar, Torrey Pines, La Jolla, Pacific Beach and Mission Bay, Sunset Cliffs, downtown San Diego and Balboa Park, then Mission Trails and the summit of Cowles Mountain. From there the course climbs into the Cuyamaca mountains past Cuyamaca Peak, Stonewall Peak and Lake Cuyamaca, joins the Pacific Crest Trail, and descends into the Anza-Borrego Desert. The route is planned to finish at Eagle Rock on the PCT, pending permission from the Los Coyotes Tribe; without it, the course adds three miles to finish elsewhere.

The race

What this one is

A point-to-point 200-mile run circumnavigating San Diego County: coastal bluffs and beach towns, the city and Balboa Park, the Cuyamaca mountains, the Pacific Crest Trail, and the Anza-Borrego Desert. Revived for 2026 by Alex Esquivel and Gabe Peterson, the only two finishers of the original 2022 running, together with Gabe Rubenstein, who crewed them that year. Entry is capped at 24 runners, a crew is required, and aid is minimal by design: the directors call it a 'fat-ass style' event with checkpoints roughly every 25 miles rather than full aid stations. All profits are donated to a Native American charity, in keeping with founder Phillip Espinoza's original wish to acknowledge the Kumeyaay homelands the course crosses.

Phillip Espinoza created the original San Diego 200. It last ran in 2022, when Alex Esquivel and Gabe Peterson were its only two finishers, crossing the line together in about 65 hours after being crewed by Gabe Rubenstein. The three brought the race back for 2026, changing the finish to Eagle Rock on the Pacific Crest Trail and adding Balboa Park and Mission Trails to the route.

Crew rules
A crew is required for every runner. Unlike most 200-mile races, crew may meet a runner anywhere it is safe and legal to do so. The first 100 miles pass through populated, accessible areas where a runner could largely self-support at stores and gas stations; the second 100 miles grow increasingly remote, with water and resupply becoming scarce, and crew becomes critical there. Entering a moving car at any point is disqualifying, but resting or sleeping in a parked crew vehicle is allowed. sandiego200.com
Pacer rules
Pacers are allowed anywhere on the course. Runners are asked to use only one pacer at a time. Pacers are for safety, company and support, not for carrying a runner's gear or supplies. sandiego200.com
Drop bag rules

Cutoff philosophy
One cutoff covers the whole distance: 82 hours from the Friday 6 a.m. start to a finish window that ends 4 p.m. the following Monday. The directors frame the first 100 miles as coverable in about 30 hours by an experienced ultrarunner, leaving more than 52 hours for the mountain and desert second half. sandiego200.com

One person has been out there with a camera or a microphone.

These are other people's work and we link straight to them. Watching costs nothing and needs no account. More of them: every race we hold, on film.

I keep this catalog because the information is scattered and hard to trust. Telling you when it moves is the same job.
