The course

Course line from the race's own GPX. Source file.

Three laps of the base 50K loop (One loop of the base 50K course: TMS -> 1.5 mi asphalt to the Gerard Hiking Trail (GHT) trailhead -> south on the west GHT to Wolfkiel Run AS#1 (7.1 mi) -> Egbert Farm/Petroleum Center AS#2 (13.9 mi, the turnaround) -> north on the east GHT past Cow Run Shelters (unstaffed water, ~18.9 mi) to Miller Farm Rd bridge AS#3 (22.7 mi) -> past the Course Marshal tent (unstaffed water, ~28.7 mi) near the Drake Well entrance -> back across Jersey Bridge and the paved bike path to the TMS finish/AS#4 (31.1 mi).) followed by a fourth, shorter, non-uniform 'Boughton Acid Works going home' loop from and back to AS#4/TMS: 1.5 mi to the GHT trailhead, a 5 mi primarily-single-track loop past the historic Boughton Acid Works site and over a suspension bridge across Oil Creek, then 1.25 mi back across Jersey Bridge to the TMS finish -- 7.7 mi total, skipping the 1-mile Drake Well Museum section that the first three loops include.

Loops are NOT uniform, so loop_distance_miles is left blank rather than forced to one number: loops 1-3 are each the standard 31.1 mi base loop (7.1+6.8+8.8+8.4 mi by section), loop 4 is the shorter, different 'Boughton Acid Works going home' loop, published as both 7.6 mi (course-page summary line) and 7.7 mi (course-page itemized breakdown: 1.5 + 5 + 1.25 mi) -- both figures come from the same page and were not reconciled. Loop 4 skips the Drake Well Museum section and both unstaffed water points (Cow Run, the Course Marshal tent) that loops 1-3 pass, and has no aid station of its own between AS#4/start and the finish. Note also: 3 loops (93.3 mi) + loop 4 (7.7 mi) sums to 101.0 mi, about 0.4 mi more than the race's own published total of '100.6 miler' (87.1 mi trail + 13.5 mi asphalt) -- both numbers are the race's own, and the gap is most likely section-mileage rounding, not resolved here.

The race

What this one is

Four concurrent races (25K, 50K, 100K, 100 Mile) on an approximately 50K counter-clockwise loop run mostly on the single-track Gerard Hiking Trail of Oil Creek State Park near Titusville, Pennsylvania, plus short paved bike-path and side-street sections linking the trailhead to race HQ at Titusville Middle School. The valley is the site of the world's first commercial oil well, drilled by Edwin Drake in 1859.

Race-results page lists entrants data back to a 2009 running (84 registered, 80 started); the home page for the 2026 edition calls it the '17th running,' which would put the first year at 2010, one year later than the earliest results entry -- recorded as a conflict, not resolved. The 100 mile race has repeatedly served as an RRCA Pennsylvania (and in some years Eastern Region or National) Ultra Championship race, per the year-by-year entrants list on the results page.

Crew rules
Crew is allowed for all 100-mile participants but ONLY within 100 feet of AS#2 (Egbert Farm, Petroleum Center) and AS#4 (TMS/race HQ, 100K & 100 mile only) -- assistance anywhere else on course, including at the remote AS#1 (Wolfkiel Run) or AS#3 (Miller Farm Rd bridge), is grounds for disqualification. 'It is only 10 miles on paved roads from TMS AS#4 to Petroleum Center's Egbert Farm AS#2.' oc100trailruns.org
Pacer rules
Pacers allowed for the last ~39 miles (the 3rd 31.1mi loop plus the 7.7mi loop 4), joining after the runner completes loop 2 at TMS. One pacer at a time, 3 pacers maximum across the race. Options: AS#4 to AS#2 = 14 mi one-way; AS#2 to AS#4 = 17 mi one-way; AS#4 to Finish (loop 4) = 7.7 mi; AS#2-to-AS#2 or AS#4-to-AS#4 loops = 31 mi. Must register and sign a waiver at TMS race HQ (cafeteria) or AS#2, and wear a 4-digit RoadID pacer bib. oc100trailruns.org
Drop bag rules
Drop bags allowed at AS#2 (Petroleum Center, all races) and AS#4/TMS (100K & 100-mile only, without crew) -- soft-side XL Ziploc-style bags only, no hard totes/bins. oc100trailruns.org
Cutoff philosophy
No cutoffs are published for loop 1. Loop 2 carries one cutoff, at AS#4/TMS on completion (12:43am). Loop 3 carries a cutoff at every station, three of them phrased as the aid station itself CLOSING (course-sweeper enforced) rather than a runner deadline: AS#1 2:56am, AS#2 5:06am, AS#4 10:15am (the AS#4 close is explicit that it gives 2h45m, ~22 min/mile, for the final loop 'with the Hill of Truth on it'); AS#3 at 7:56am is a plain runner cutoff. The race ends at 1:00pm Sunday, 32 hours after the 5:00am Saturday start, no exceptions. oc100trailruns.org
