The race

What this one is

A 100.6-mile loop trail ultramarathon on rocky singletrack encircling Fort Valley, Virginia, in the Massanutten Mountains. Run and organized by the Virginia Happy Trails Running Club, starting and finishing at the Caroline Furnace Lutheran Camp, with a 36-hour time limit.

First run in 1995. Ed Demoney was race director from 1995 through 2003 (with Chris Scott handling race-day duties in 1996); Stan Duobinis took over for the 2004 event, when the field had grown to 117 starters, and by the end of his seven-year term the race filled to 180 with a waitlist of 48; Kevin Sayers became the third director in July 2010. The current course was shortened in 2019. The 2026 running was the race's 30th.

Crew rules
Crews are permitted only at certain aid stations, plus the 211 East checkpoint, which is not an aid station. Crews and pacers may only meet their runners within 200 feet of a designated aid station. Your crew and pacer may have only one vehicle. Follow aid station and Forest Service parking instructions; do not enter cordoned-off runner-only areas. Aid station food is for runners. Violations can lead to exclusion of the crew from aid stations or disqualification of the runner. Dogs are not allowed at the camp or in any aid station. new.vhtrc.org
Pacer rules
A pacer may join a runner at the Camp Roosevelt aid station or any aid station beyond it where crew access is allowed, and at Habron Gap (mile 54) after 6 p.m. Saturday. Runners 62 or older may have a pacer from Elizabeth Furnace (mile 33.3). Pacers may only join at an aid station. One pacer at a time. Pacer and runner stay together at all times. The pacer is a companion, not a leader, and not a mule: the pacer does not carry the runner's water bottles, food or gels. new.vhtrc.org
Drop bag rules
Drop bags go to the stations that take them. Pliable bag only, no boxes or rigid containers; no longer than 16 inches, wider than 10 inches or higher than 6 inches. Mark each bag with bib number, name and the aid station name (not its number). No glass, breakables or hiking poles. Bags come back to the finish line; they are not mailed after the event. new.vhtrc.org
Cutoff philosophy
All aid stations with crew access have cut-off times that will be enforced. You must be out of the aid station before the cut-off. The overall time limit to complete the course is 36 hours. new.vhtrc.org

What it looks like out there

Somebody has been out there with a camera the tables say the climb is long. these say what long feels like.

One person has been out there with a camera or a microphone.

These are other people's work and we link straight to them. Watching costs nothing and needs no account. More of them: every race we hold, on film.

Ran this race? Tell the next runner what you know.

Nobody sees it until we have read it. No account, no sign-in.

Leave blank if it applies to the whole race.

Leave blank if it is not about one particular stop.

Optional. Something like “Cal Street, mile 62 to 78”.

Write it the way you would say it to someone at the start line.

Optional, and it decides nothing. It only tells the next runner where this is coming from.

This changes nothing on the page on its own. Somebody checks it against the race first.

Ultras change. We will tell you when this one does.

Cutoffs move, races get postponed, lotteries open and close. We read the race's own sources and record where every fact came from. Put your email in and we will send you what changed, and where we read it.

No account, and nothing to cancel.

What happens to your email. Nothing else. I do not sell it, and I will not send you anything except this race changing. One click gets you out.

I keep this catalog because the information is scattered and hard to trust. Telling you when it moves is the same job.
