Who's going to Burney Mountain 100?

Free. You can start with nothing.

Free, and always will be. NavRun makes money from race-day planning for runners who want it, never from this. Ultras change constantly, sometimes the morning of. Always confirm with the race director and the official website before you rely on anything here.

One loop through Lassen National Forest, the Burney Basin and the Thousand Lakes Wilderness, starting and finishing at the Burney Mountain Guest Ranch. The route depends on snow in the high country: Course A is the only version that summits Magee Peak, and Courses B, C and D adjust the upper-elevation sections.

The race publishes approximate figures for the climb and the terrain: about 15,000 feet of cumulative climbing on the race page, about 14,000 feet in the runner's guide, a lowest point near 3,000 ft and a highest near 8,600 ft, and roughly 39 miles of singletrack, 11 miles of rail trail and 54 miles of forest road. A small amount of pavement comes near the Hwy 89 and Goose Valley aid stations. Poles are recommended in most years for the Burney Mountain climb and Thousand Lakes (Tamarack to Cypress), and may be required in a year of late snowpack. June can be hot, or snow can fall on the course.

The race

What this one is

A 100-mile loop through Lassen National Forest and the Thousand Lakes Wilderness in northern California, starting and finishing at the Burney Mountain Guest Ranch in Cassel. The route passes Hat Creek Rim and climbs Burney Mountain, with views of Mount Lassen and Mount Shasta, and the final route depends on how much snow is left in the high country.

Crew rules
Runners may only enter the crew vehicle at designated crew access aid stations. Crew vehicles are not allowed to "mule" or carry items for runners. Do not drive alongside your runner. Drive slowly, prioritize runner safety, and minimize dust. Runners may be disqualified if the crew does not abide by these rules. Crew access is allowed at some stations, but not all (no crew access at Cache 22, Tamarack, Cypress or the Top of Burney Mountain). docs.google.com
Pacer rules
Up to 4 pacers are allowed, but only one at a time. Pacers must register with a race official at the start of their segment and must carry the same gear as runners. Pacers cannot carry gear for their runner. Your first pacer can join at Burney Mountain Base. Pacers can join or switch at the Base of Burney Mountain aid station (passed twice), Goose Valley rd and Black Ranch. Pacers must stay with the runner until a designated crew access point. docs.google.com
Drop bag rules
All drop bags need to be at Burney Mountain Guest Ranch between 4pm-7pm on Thursday before race start. Drop bag locations are noted on the aid station chart. docs.google.com
Cutoff philosophy
The course has generous cut-off times, and runners have 40 hours to finish. intermountainendurance.com

What it looks like out there

Somebody has been out there with a camera the tables say the climb is long. these say what long feels like.

One person has been out there with a camera or a microphone.

These are other people's work and we link straight to them. Watching costs nothing and needs no account. More of them: every race we hold, on film.

What you know every one of these is read by a person before it changes anything

Ran this race? Tell the next runner what you know.

Nobody sees it until we have read it. No account, no sign-in.

Leave blank if it applies to the whole race.

Leave blank if it is not about one particular stop.

Optional. Something like “Cal Street, mile 62 to 78”.

Write it the way you would say it to someone at the start line.

Optional, and it decides nothing. It only tells the next runner where this is coming from.

This changes nothing on the page on its own. Somebody checks it against the race first.

Optional. Filled in for you when you start from a specific line on the page.

Somebody watches it before it goes anywhere near this page. What we are after is footage of this course, on the ground. If it would be just as true of any other race, it is not this.

Ultras change. We will tell you when this one does.

Cutoffs move, races get postponed, lotteries open and close. We read the race's own sources and record where every fact came from. Put your email in and we will send you what changed, and where we read it.

No account, and nothing to cancel.

What happens to your email. Nothing else. I do not sell it, and I will not send you anything except this race changing. One click gets you out.

I keep this catalog because the information is scattered and hard to trust. Telling you when it moves is the same job.
