The course

Where it goes multi-loop · 16 aid stations

A 5 km out and back at the start, then three 25 km loops from Islet Lake Staging Area. This was the course for the 2004 and 2018 Canadian 50 mile Trail Championships.

The 50 mile adds a 5 km out and back at the start to the three 25 km loops. Each 25 km lap has 305 m (1000 ft) of climbing. The stretch of about 3.5 km on the Wapiti trail is the most technical: an equestrian trail, very rutted. Direction alternates by year: clockwise in even years, counter clockwise in odd years.

The race

What this one is

Trail ultra in the Cooking Lake-Blackfoot Provincial Recreation Area, just east of Edmonton, run on the last Saturday in May. One 25 km loop from Islet Lake Staging Area builds every distance: the 25 km, the 50 km, the 50 mile and the 100 km. The loop runs clockwise in even years and counter clockwise in odd years.

Blackfoot Ultra began in 2002, when there were fewer than six ultras in all of Alberta, to show off the trails of the Cooking Lake-Blackfoot Provincial Recreation Area and to prepare racers for mountain races later in the season. The first year started from Central staging area with a 25 km, 50 km, 100 km and a relay; the park then allowed the start at Islet Staging Area, where it has been since. The 50 miler was added in the second year and a kids race followed. Over the years it has hosted Canadian championships for the ACU at 50 km, 50 mile and 100 km.

What it looks like out there

Somebody has been out there with a camera the tables say the climb is long. these say what long feels like.

Nobody has been out there with a camera or a microphone yet. A gap means nobody has found it, not that it is not out there. Seen a course preview or a film of this one? Send us the link.

Ultras change. We will tell you when this one does.

Cutoffs move, races get postponed, lotteries open and close. We read the race's own sources and record where every fact came from. Put your email in and we will send you what changed, and where we read it.

No account, and nothing to cancel.

What happens to your email. Nothing else. I do not sell it, and I will not send you anything except this race changing. One click gets you out.

I keep this catalog because the information is scattered and hard to trust. Telling you when it moves is the same job.
