UTMB 2026 Results: Ben Dhiman and Blandine L'Hirondel Win¶
Ben Dhiman crossed the UTMB Mont-Blanc finish line in Chamonix in 18 hours, 16 minutes, and 29 seconds. Blandine L'Hirondel won the women's race in 21:54:49, moving from 82nd place early in the race to first across 173 kilometers through France, Italy, and Switzerland.
That is the score. The question the running community is arguing about is how Dhiman got there: he moved to the front at kilometer 41 and the split data from Vallorcine at kilometer 160 shows the gap was still opening with less than 14 kilometers to go. Whether that is exceptional pacing discipline or a field that did not push back is what the checkpoint data lets you decide.

Dhiman's 18:16:29 is the fastest winning time on the 2026 edition of the course. The route ran 173.6 kilometers with 9,700 meters of gain after the Pyramides Calcaires section was removed from the course before the start and the start itself was delayed two hours by storm risk. Any comparison to prior winning times involves a different route.
The course that ran on Friday night¶
The 2026 UTMB 100M was scheduled to start at 15:45 local time on Friday, August 28. Storm risk over the Aiguilles Rouges moved the start back two hours to 17:45. Before any runner left Chamonix, race management cut the Pyramides Calcaires section from the course, bringing the actual distance to 173.6 kilometers with 9,700 meters of gain instead of the advertised 174 kilometers and 9,900 meters. The 46-hour 45-minute cutoff stayed. The 2026 race also served as the UTMB World Series Finals, with series championship points attached to the finish order across all race week events.
A two-hour delay and a route shortening before the start are not the same as a mid-race emergency. The modification was made deliberately and communicated to the field. Every runner who finished in 2026 ran the same 173.6 kilometers under the same cutoff on the same modified course.
How Dhiman won: kilometer 41 to the finish¶
Dhiman moved to the front at kilometer 41 and the gap kept growing.

The number that makes the trajectory concrete: across the entire race, Dhiman spent 9 minutes and 23 seconds stopped. That is the total time off his feet at every aid station across 18-plus hours of racing in the Alps.
Two things are true about that number at the same time. First, it represents nearly perfect aid station execution: in a race where a runner can easily spend 45 minutes to an hour in aid stations without feeling wasteful, 9:23 is close to the floor. Second, the floor is only meaningful if the pace is there to sustain it. Nine minutes stopped across 18 hours of racing at sea level is one thing. Nine minutes stopped across 18 hours with 9,700 meters of climbing, the overnight descent to Courmayeur, and the final push back through the darkness into Switzerland is something different.
The Vallorcine observation is the data point the community is focused on. Vallorcine sits at approximately kilometer 160. If a runner opens a lead at kilometer 41 and that lead is still growing at kilometer 160, there are two interpretations. One is that the runner behind them ran out of the ability to chase. The other is that Dhiman ran the second half of the race as well as the first, which meant the gap opened rather than closed under pressure that never materialized.
The splits confirm what happened. They cannot tell you which of those reads is correct. That race, the one where someone pressed at kilometer 80 and forced a decision, was not run.
How L'Hirondel won: 82nd to first¶
Blandine L'Hirondel was around 82nd place at an early point in the women's race. She finished it first, in 21:54:49.
Position-by-checkpoint data for L'Hirondel's climb through the field is not confirmed in two independent sources, so this section reads as a trajectory rather than a table. What the sources agree on: she ran steadily through the night and through the Italian section, and she arrived at the front with enough margin to hold it across the final kilometers into Chamonix. Her finish on Saturday afternoon local time was well inside the cutoff and well clear of the women's runner behind her.
The shape of her race is the structural contrast to Dhiman's. His approach was presence from the front, maintained across 18 hours. Hers was accumulation, not conservation: being at 82nd in the early going of a 173-kilometer race does not mean running within yourself. It means running your race rather than the pace set by the women in front of you. Over the overnight section and into the Swiss checkpoints, that choice paid out as positions gained.
The useful thing about her trajectory is what it says about time horizons at this distance. At UTMB, there is enough race left at kilometer 80 to make a choice in the first 80 kilometers look smart or look wrong, and neither conclusion is available until much later. The rest of the podium, and Dauwalter¶
Emily Schmitz finished third in the women's race. She is 45 years old. Her placing time is in the official results; the confirmed facts here are third place and her age.
Courtney Dauwalter stopped at Lac Combal, approximately 68 kilometers into the race. She has not said why.
What these two races show about executing UTMB¶
Two different approaches to 173 kilometers, both producing a win.
Dhiman's approach: front by kilometer 41, 9 minutes and 23 seconds stopped across the entire race, and a gap that was widening rather than holding at kilometer 160. The pacing discipline required to stop that rarely in a race of this length is not a separate capability from the running. It is the same thing expressed differently. Every minute not spent at an aid station is a minute that does not need to be recovered on the next climb.
L'Hirondel's approach: patient early, accumulating position through the overnight section, first at the line. The 82nd-to-first trajectory is not a comeback story because she was never behind where she chose to be. The final position is what it looks like when a race plan drawn up before the start runs without requiring adjustment.
Neither approach is offered here as the correct one. UTMB in 2026 produced two winners and both made one foundational decision: run their race rather than someone else's. The splits are the evidence of that decision's success. They are not a template.
One specific number worth sitting with: 9 minutes 23 seconds stopped across 18 hours. Not because replicating it is achievable for most runners at this distance, and not because minimizing aid station time is universally the right call. It is useful because it shows the scale of time available. A runner who spends 45 minutes in aid stations at UTMB has not made a fatal error. A runner who spends 9:23 is showing what the minimum looks like when the engine can sustain it. The gap between those two numbers is 35 minutes. At a race where the margin between finishing positions in the top ten is often measured in that same range, the arithmetic is not incidental.
The course is still the course at the end. Dhiman and L'Hirondel outlasted 173 kilometers and 9,700 meters of Mont-Blanc without defeating it. The cutoff clock ran for both of them the same as it ran for the runner who finished last. That is the thing about this distance: the course does not adjust for the winner.
