A loop course, starting and finishing at the Caroline Furnace Lutheran Camp, run as two "almost loops" resembling a top-heavy figure-8: the first loop runs clockwise up the western ridge of the Massanuttens to Elizabeth Furnace (mile 33.3), then along the eastern ridge south to Gap Creek I (mile 69.6); the second, smaller loop runs counter-clockwise along Kerns Mountain south to Bird Knob before returning north to Gap Creek II (mile 96.8). Run primarily on rocky singletrack; more than 80% trail, the remainder a mix of gravel and paved roads.

The race

What this one is

A 100.6-mile loop trail ultramarathon on rocky singletrack encircling Fort Valley, Virginia, in the Massanutten Mountains. Run and organized by the Virginia Happy Trails Running Club, starting and finishing at the Caroline Furnace Lutheran Camp, with a 36-hour time limit.

First run in 1995. Ed Demoney was race director from 1995 through 2003 (with Chris Scott handling race-day duties in 1996); Stan Duobinis took over for the 2004 event, when the field had grown to 117 starters, and by the end of his seven-year term the race filled to 180 with a waitlist of 48; Kevin Sayers became the third director in July 2010. The current course was shortened in 2019. The 2026 running was the race's 30th.

Crew rules
Nine of the 15 aid stations (plus the start/finish) allow crew access; crews and pacers may meet runners only within 200 feet of a designated aid station, with one exception (the 211 East parking area, which is not itself an aid station). Crew and pacer share a single vehicle -- no separate cars. Crews must comply with aid station personnel and Forest Service parking directions; violations can lead to exclusion of the crew from an aid station or all aid stations, and in aggravated cases, disqualification of the runner being supported. No dogs at the Caroline Furnace Lutheran Camp at all; elsewhere dogs must stay away from aid stations, runners and volunteers and be kept on a leash. new.vhtrc.org
Pacer rules
A pacer may join a runner at any time at Camp Roosevelt (mile 63.9) or any aid station beyond that point with crew access. After 6:00 pm on Saturday, a pacer may join a runner as early as Habron Gap (mile 54.0). Only one pacer at a time; pacer and runner must always remain together, with the pacer following, not leading. The pacer may not carry the runner's water, food, flashlight, shoes or clothing ("muling is expressly forbidden"); pacers get no drop bags. Pacers may not leave a car at Camp Roosevelt or at Gap Creek/Visitor Center due to limited parking, though Camp Roosevelt is a short walk from the start/finish where a car may be left. new.vhtrc.org
Drop bag rules
Drop bags are carried to the 10 aid stations that provide for them (Edinburg Gap, Woodstock Tower, Elizabeth Furnace, Shawl Gap, Habron Gap, Camp Roosevelt, Gap Creek I, Visitor Center, Picnic Area, Gap Creek II). Bags must be pliable and fit within a 16 x 10 x 6 inch box, marked with the runner's name, bib number and the aid station name (not the aid station number). Due at 8:00 pm on the Friday before the race, following the pre-race briefing. Runners (or a designated person) must collect their own bags; the race will not mail drop bags after the event, and unclaimed bags are a known hassle for organizers. new.vhtrc.org
Cutoff philosophy
The overall time limit is 36 hours (5:00 am Saturday to 5:00 pm Sunday). Aid stations with crew access have enforced cutoffs; a runner must be out of the station before its cutoff. Three remote, non-crew-accessible stations (Woodstock Tower, Powells Fort) carry cutoffs described as a recommendation only, not enforced, though the race warns "we believe that you will not complete the course if you do not achieve them" and that a runner who goes on past one may find the next aid station no longer intact. Two stations (Moreland Gap, Bird Knob) have no cutoff at all. new.vhtrc.org
