The course

Where it goes multi-loop · 16 aid stations · rust marks a stop your crew can reach

Five identical 20-mile laps on trails connecting the Mānoa, Makiki, and Nuʻuanu valleys above Honolulu, on technical single-track through rainforest.

"The HURT 100 course consists almost exclusively of technical, single-track trail on surfaces that include roots, rocks, and soil in a wide range of conditions, from sun-baked clay to mud of varying depth. Sudden hairpin turns and steep inclines of up to approximately two miles in length are a common occurrence." There are 20 stream crossings (4 per lap); one crossing near Nuʻuanu is on scattered, slippery rock and runners will likely get wet feet. HURT's own About page: "the HURT 100 has become known worldwide as one of the hardest 100-mile races." The race is capped at 135 starters; the first HURT 100 in 2001 had 8 finishers. Per HURT's own public results archive (through the 2026 race), the last five editions recorded 75 (2024), 85 (2025) and 84 (2026) finishers — no starters count is published alongside these finisher counts, so a finish-rate percentage cannot be computed from this source alone.

The race

What this one is

The Hawaiian Ultra Running Team's Trail 100-Mile Endurance Run: a five-lap, 100-mile race on technical single-track in the rainforest above Honolulu, run every January.

HURT traces its roots to a group of Hawaiʻi trail and ultra runners in the early 1980s who called themselves the Hawaiian Ultra Running Team. In 2001, four local runners (Jeff Huff, Greg Cuadra, akabill Molmen, and Greg Pirkl) brought the idea of a 100-mile trail race in Hawaiʻi to John Salmonson, and the HURT 100 Mile Endurance Run was born. The first HURT 100 had eight finishers. The race is organized today by HURT Inc, a 501(c)(3) formed in 2020.

Crew rules
Crew may only support runner and pacer within 100 yards of an aid station, never on the course, and aid from crew may only be given at official aid stations. Crew access differs sharply by station: at Makīkī, one parking pass is issued per runner for one vehicle (Hālau Kū Māna School); at Mānoa, crews are barred before 10:00 a.m. on Saturday (first-loop congestion) and parking is private ($7 fee) or limited free street parking 5-10 minutes' walk away; at Nuʻuanu, NO crew, family, spectators or friends are allowed at any time, and pacers may not start there either. hurt100.com
Pacer rules
Pacer may start accompanying runner after 60 miles OR beginning at 17:00 on Saturday, whichever comes first. Pacer must start pacing duty only at the Mānoa or Makiki aid stations — no pacers may start at Nuʻuanu. Only one pacer at a time. If pacer falls out of visual distance for longer than the course allows, runner may continue without them, but the pacer must exit at the next aid station. hurt100.com
Drop bag rules
Drop bags limited to 12in (h) x 12in (w) x 18in (l) per aid station. Runners may have bags at any/all of the three aid stations (Makiki, Mānoa, Nuʻuanu), each labeled with pre-printed labels from the runner bag. Bags are brought to Makiki on race morning starting 04:45 and collected there for delivery to Mānoa/Nuʻuanu; after each aid station closes, remaining bags are transferred back to the Hālau Kū Māna parking lot at Makiki. Runners must collect bags by 18:15 Sunday or they are donated/recycled/discarded. hurt100.com
Cutoff philosophy
HURT publishes a single hard finish line at 36 hours (Saturday 06:00 to Sunday 18:00) plus three intermediate cutoffs, but states plainly that those intermediate cutoffs "pertain to the fifth lap (Miles 80-100)" only — the first four 20-mile laps carry no published cutoff. "Cut-off times will be strictly enforced. Runner must not continue after exceeding a cut-off time... The cutoff times above apply to ALL runners, regardless of their mileage covered." Race staff will attempt to shuttle a timed-out runner back to Makiki. The Race Director and aid station captains also retain discretion to pull a runner earlier if they judge the runner cannot reach the next drop point before it closes, or if safety is at risk. hurt100.com
