The course

Where it goes point to point · 11 aid stations

Course line from the race's own GPX. Source file.

Point-to-point 100K on the Black Canyon National Recreation Trail from Mayer High School (Spring Valley, AZ) to the Emery Henderson Trailhead (New River, AZ), net downhill but with the toughest, most technical climbing and descending in the final third. A Western States 100 Golden Ticket race and general WSER lottery qualifier.

Course description in the runner's own words: the first ~20 miles are fast and downhill and tempt runners out too hard; most of the climbing, steep descents and rocky technical terrain come in the final miles after the Black Canyon City aid station. Major creek crossings between miles 28-45, the largest at mile 34 (an alternate rock-hopping route is marked when wet). Three points where the marked route briefly diverts from the Black Canyon Trail itself: through Bumble Bee Ranch, through Deep Canyon Ranch, and a mandatory out-and-back at the Black Canyon City aid station.

The race

What this one is

Point-to-point 100K and 50K ultramarathons on the Black Canyon National Recreation Trail through Arizona's Sonoran Desert, both starting at Mayer High School in Spring Valley, AZ. The 100K (Saturday) finishes at the Emery Henderson Trailhead near New River; the 50K (Sunday) finishes at Deep Canyon Ranch near Black Canyon City. Race directed by Aravaipa Running, presented by HOKA, and a Western States 100 Golden Ticket race.

First run in 2014. Originally paired the 100K with a 60K second distance; the second distance was later changed to a 50K (the site's own Course Records section separately lists a retired '60K (Old Course)' record, last set 2024). A 'High Water Reroute Course' record also exists from 2019, indicating the course has been altered at least once for high water on the Agua Fria/Black Canyon crossings. Became a Western States 100 Golden Ticket race and, per the race page and UltraSignup listing, joined the World Trail Majors collection.

Qualifying
Two distinct WSER pathways. (1) Golden Ticket: this is one of six 2027 HOKA Golden Ticket races feeding the June 2027 Western States 100 -- the top 3 women and top 3 men finishers automatically qualify for entry (rolling down to 7th if needed). (2) General lottery qualifier: any runner completing the full 100K in under 17 hours is eligible to enter the Western States lottery. The 50K does not qualify for either pathway. wser.org

Crew rules
Crew allowed only at Bumble Bee Ranch, Deep Canyon Ranch, and Table Mesa aid stations. Crew access to the Emery Henderson finish is by free shuttle bus only from the Anthem Outlets (no parking at the trailhead). Green/red flagging at each crew-accessible aid station marks exactly where crew assistance (water, refills, aid, medical, cooling) is allowed and where it stops; after the red flag no aid of any kind, including from pacers, is permitted. aravaiparunning.com
Pacer rules
One pacer at a time, human and on foot only (no pets or bicycles), must sign a waiver and wear a designated pacer bib, cannot mule or carry gear/supplies for the runner. Pacers may start with their runner at Deep Canyon Ranch (mile 31.9) and switch out at Table Mesa (stated as mile 50.9 in this sentence; the aid-station chart itself lists Table Mesa at mile 51.1 -- see _meta.notes). aravaiparunning.com
Drop bag rules
Drop bags for the 100K permitted at Bumble Bee Ranch, Deep Canyon Ranch, Table Mesa, and the Emery Henderson finish. May be dropped at the pre-race expo or at the start line. aravaiparunning.com
Cutoff philosophy
Cutoffs are enforced by elapsed gun time from your own wave's start, not by a shared wall-clock deadline: a 7:00 AM wave's finish cutoff is 3:00 AM, an 8:00 AM wave's is 4:00 AM, both 20 hours after their own start. aravaiparunning.com
